Plum Chutney is one of those chutney recipes or Indian condiment recipe that has all the components like being sweet, spicy, tangy and even saltiness adjusted to perfection.
Plum Chutney is a perfect side-dish for your idli, dosas, phulkas, chaats and it even goes well with all your Indian chaats.
Recently I had posted a South Indian Thali recipes, which clearly depicted the things that you need to complete a Thali. And I would say this Plum Chutney is one such flavour packed side-dish that would elevate your dining experience.
So it all started with my friend giving me a whole box of plums that she had from her home-grown garden. How cool is that!! Right..
And after eating a lot of it I was still left with some and that is when I decided to make this Plum Chutney.
Whats the big deal ahh.. you got the plums so you made it.. so what!!!
Well, it does not end there; this Plum Chutney has so much health and nutritional value to it..
A. I have used Jaggery and Dates in place of Sugar which is so much healthier option.
B. The nutmeg powder is also good for us.
C. Plums itself is so much nutritional and helps in combating so many disorders.

Try this in place of your regular dates chutney in chaats and I am sure you would keep coming back to this.

Here is the detailed recipe
Indian Spiced Plum Chutney is a perfect Indian condiment to go along with your idli, dosas, phulkas, samosa or any kind of chaat
- 10 nos Plums quartered
- 5 tbsp Jaggery
- 5-6 nos Dates
- 1 no dried red chilli
- 1 tsp Grated ginger
- 1/4 tsp Rock Salt
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 tsp Cumin powder
- 1/8 tsp Nutmeg powder
- 1/8 tsp Red Chilli powder
- 1 tbsp Roasted Sesame seeds (refer notes)
- 1 tsp Vinegar
In a saucepan, over medium heat combine together plums, jaggery and dates. Give a stir and add the red chili and ginger. Cover with a lid and cook for 15 mins until plums soften a bit. Do stir in between to avoid it from burning at the base.
Once the plums soften, do a taste test to see if everything tastes good.
Add the seasoning which is salt, rock salt, cumin, nutmeg and chili powder. Mix it all well and cook for another 5 mins or so until the plums are completely dissolved.
Let it cool and then blend into a smooth paste without adding water.
Transfer to a glass bottle, add the dry roasted sesame seeds and vinegar. Mix well.
Store in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.
1. All the seasoning along with jaggery and dates can be adjusted to taste. Since the plums are naturally sweet and sour so everything will be dependent on that.
2. Dry roast the sesame seeds for only a minute or so. No need for it to change the colour. Dry roasting the seeds will extend the shelf life.
3. Same goes with vinegar. Vinegar acts as preservative which makes it easier to store it for a longer duration. However if you are making a small batch and going to finish it off quickly then you can skip this.
4. You can also use dried plums in this recipe. Just soak them for 30 mins before proceeding with the recipe
