Ingredients

- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
- 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
- 2–3 garlic cloves, finely minced or grated
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan or processed cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley or coriander, finely chopped
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried Italian herbs (optional)
Ingredient Notes:
- Puff pastry: Use store-bought puff pastry sheets for convenience. Make sure it’s fully thawed before using to prevent tearing while rolling and twisting.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic gives the best flavor. If you prefer, you can substitute 1 teaspoon of garlic powder for 2–3 fresh cloves. Adjust according to your taste.
- Herbs: Fresh parsley or coriander adds a pop of color and freshness, while dried Italian herbs bring extra aroma. Both are optional but recommended.
- Seasoning: Salt and black pepper enhance the flavor — adjust to taste.
Step by Step Instructions
Make sure your puff pastry sheet is fully thawed according to the package instructions. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Mix melted butter (or olive oil) with minced garlic (or garlic powder), salt, pepper, and herbs in a small bowl.

Roll the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick (image 1).
Brush the garlic butter evenly on one half of the rectangle. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top (image 2).

Fold the other half of the rectangle over the garlic butter and cheese to form a layered rectangle (image 3).
Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut the pastry into strips about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. This thickness ensures the twists cook evenly and puff nicely (image 4).

Hold each end of a strip and twist several times. Place the twists on the prepared baking tray, pressing the ends lightly to secure (image 5).
Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until golden, crispy, and puffed.
As soon as the twists come out of the oven, you can brush them with any remaining garlic butter for extra flavor and shine, if you have any left.
Let the twists cool for 5 minutes and serve warm with dips or enjoy as they are.

Easy cheesy garlic twists with their crispy texture dipped in cold dips like pesto aioli or whipped ricotta dip are an easy yet impressive appetizer for this holiday season.
Best Tips:
- Storage: Store leftover twists in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To refresh their crispiness, reheat in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes.
- Make-ahead: You can assemble the twists and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment, then cover and refrigerate for a few hours before baking. This is perfect for preparing ahead of parties.
- Serving suggestions: These twists are delicious on their own or served with dips like pesto aioli, cheese dip, whipped feta dip, whipped ricotta dip, or herbed yogurt. They also pair well with soups or salads for a snack or appetizer.
- Cheese variations: Try Pecorino Romano, Gruyere, cheddar, or mozzarella for varied flavors.
- Herb options: Swap parsley for cilantro or basil, or add a sprinkle of chili flakes for a slight kick.
- Twisting tip: Twist each strip evenly to ensure uniform baking. Press the ends lightly so they don’t unravel while baking. This is a creative way to make your snacks look fancy with simple ingredients.
- Cooking alternatives: These twists can be baked in a conventional oven, toaster oven, or even an air fryer. If using an air fryer, use the same temperature and time settings for equally crispy results.
