Easy and Refreshing, these Mango popsicles are one of my favourite frozen treats in the summer.. And guess what!!! They are also a healthier alternative to traditional popsicles.
What are Mango Popsicles
Mango Popsicles are a delicious frozen sweet treat that is easy to make at home using simple ingredients. Being preservative-free and freshly made makes it healthier than other store-bought frozen desserts. Freshly sliced mango, blended with lemon juice and sprinkled with a touch of sugar, is the perfect flavour for summer making it a great snack for toddlers and kids!!
What more do you need on a hot day!!
Ingredients:
You only need 3 basic ingredients to make this mango ice pops at home.
- 3 cups Mangoes, fresh or frozen
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/3 cup sugar
- water if needed
Ingredients Notes
Mango: You will need about 3 cups peeled, pitted, and diced fresh mangoes for this recipe. Make sure you use ripe mangoes —they should be soft when you press on them. My personal recommendation would be to use Indian Alphonso Mangoes. If you can't find fresh mangoes where you live, feel free to use frozen ones instead like I have done today.
Lemon Juice: It brings out the sweetness of the mangoes without making them taste like lemon. Or you can also use lime juice instead.
Sugar: For today's recipe, I am using frozen mango and that is the reason for adding this much sugar to balance the taste. If using fresh you can reduce the quantity to 3 tbsp. Or substitute it with maple syrup or honey or any other natural sweetener.
Step by Step tutorial:
- Blend mango chunks, lemon juice and sugar in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add little water to adjust the consistency if need be.
- Make sure to do a taste test once blended and adjust the sweetness or tartness according to your desire.
- Divide mixture evenly among popsicle molds and freeze until solid (about 4-6 hours).
- I prefer to use ice-cream sticks (the wooden popsicle sticks) over the ones that come along with the popsicle molds and hence covered the mold with aluminium foil first and then inserted the sticks in the centre (This step is optional you can simply stick to the sticks that came along with the molds ;))
That's it.. Your homemade ice pops are ready!!
You do not have to complicate it at all.. Simply blend any natural fruit and water to make your own popsicles!! So which fruit are you going to try next?

Storing Instructions:
They are best stored in the freezer and eaten within two months.
How to Serve
Remove the popsicle from its mold. You can do this by dunking the mold into a bowl of warm water for 20 to 40 seconds, or using a hairdryer on low heat on each side of the mold for 20 seconds.
Then, gently pull out each popsicle. If you're having trouble getting them out, put the mold in the freezer for 5 minutes and try again.
You can serve these popsicles frozen on their own, or try dipping them into chocolate or caramel sauces to take the flavor up a notch! You can also sprinkle nuts on top if you'd like. Finally, enjoy!

What does it taste like?
These homemade popsicles taste just like eating mangoes in the form of ice pops. No other flavour is overpowering. Everything just compliments to bring out the prominent flavour of mangoes.
However, the flavour of these mango popsicles will vary a little depending on how ripe your mangoes are and what kind of mangoes you are using.
I usually wait until the very last minute — until the mangoes are almost squishy. That's when they're at their ripest and sweetest (and when they're at their very best for making popsicles!).
Variations
For a quick and easy treat, you can simply add some sliced mango to the popsicle mold, pour the prepared puree over it and place it in the freezer.
But if you're looking for something beyond the usual then take this mango popsicle recipe as a base and play around with it to make it your own. Here are some suggestions:
- You can add some almond milk or coconut milk, coconut cream or yoghurt to the mango puree to give it an extra kick of flavor or to make creamy mango popsicles instead.
- A squeeze of lime juice will brighten up any fruit popsicles.
- Add a touch of cardamom powder or cinnamon for an exotic twist on a classic summer treat.
- Roasted nuts like pistachios, almonds and cashews pack a wonderful crunchy texture that pairs well with frozen fruits like mangoes. Toast them on low heat till they are lightly browned before adding them to the mixture.
- If you're not entirely sold on making only mango popsicles, no worries! Mango goes very well with other fruits like pineapple or berries (strawberries in particular). So either crush the other fruits to make a puree and layer one on top of the other to get a marbled effect or simply add fruit pieces into it.
- You can also make Indian Mango Lassi Popsicles by adding greek yogurt instead of water along with some cardamom powder and saffron strands to your puree!
- One cool variation is to add some chilli powder or paprika for making spicy-sweet popsicles.
- But the simplest way would be to just use mango juice and nothing else or a combination of juices like orange juice, pineapple juice or coconut water to make tropical flavor ice pops.
Top Tips
- When making ice cream popsicles, make sure that the popsicles are frozen solid before serving so that they don’t melt too quickly as soon as they hit the room temperature air.
- To unmold them, either run the mold under warm water or dunk it in a bowl of warm water for 20-40 seconds until you hear a pop and the popsicle comes out easily.
- If you are about to buy popsicle moulds, then I recommend Silicone popsicle mold or Stainless steel ones over plastic molds. They are not only easy to use but Frozen ice pops slide right out of these, much more effortlessly.
- If you do not have ice pop molds you can simply pour the puree into ice cube trays or paper cups or plastic cups and freeze.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes if you are using fresh mangoes that are naturally ripe or sweet. You can also reduce the refined sugar quantity to suit your needs. Alternatively, any sugar substitutes like Stevia will also work. You can also consider using honey or maple syrup if that is what you prefer. Please note that adding sugar to ice pops improves the texture, by making them soft and less ice cube-like.
Around 4-6 hours should be sufficient.
Anyday I would prefer fresh over frozen; specifically Indian Alphonso Mangoes if you could find it. If not any variety can be used. You can also choose frozen mangoes like I have done today. The only difference I found is that the frozen ones need more sugar than the ones made with fresh mangoes.
