Buttercream frosting is a staple in any baker's repertoire. It's the perfect base to use with any kind of cakes, cupcakes or even cookies!!
But this Oreo Buttercream Frosting is even better than the original!! This frosting is made with no powdered sugar or heavy cream and it's simple to make yet so fluffy, silky and smooth that you will fall in love with it..
🤔 What is Oreo Buttercream Frosting made of?
Oreo buttercream frosting is a rich and creamy frosting with a delicious cookie flavor. It's a simple buttercream frosting with condensed milk and crushed Oreos. The addition of crushed Oreos makes it taste like cookies and cream ice cream! Yes, just simple ingredients in fact just 3 ingredients are all you need to make this best oreo frosting.
Indeed this oreo frosting recipe is for all you oreo lovers!!
📝 Ingredients:
- 228 gms (1 cup or 2 sticks) Butter, softenend - I prefer using unsalted butter when it comes to baking. Just take your buttercream 1 hour prior to starting with the recipe from the refrigerator to soften or at least make sure to use room temperature butter.
- 129 gms (4.5 oz) Condensed Milk - This is the substitute for sugar. Since it is already sweetened we do not need to add any powdered sugar or regular sugar.
- 75 gms (2/3 cup) Crushed Oreos - The texture of the crushed oreo determines the colour of the final buttercream. Fine crumbs would make the buttercream darker in shade as seen in pictures but keeping it caorse or chopped would retain the white colour of the buttercream intact. Btw there is no need to remove the cream filling while crushing the oreos.. Simply add it to your food processor and blitz it.
Step by Step:
- Weigh the required amount of butter in a medium bowl, cube it down and allow it to soften.
- Once softened in a mixing bowl beat the butter until it is pale yellow or almost white in colour on high speed. This would take around 13-15 mins using a hand mixer and about 8 to 10 mins in a stand mixer. Do remember to stop and scrape the bowl every now and then.
- When you observe the evident colour change in the butter, start adding condensed milk a little at a time and beat well before each addition.
- Finally, fold the crushed Oreos into the buttercream.
- Your oreo buttercream frosting is ready to be piped or used for frosting.
Wasn't that the easiest way to make perfect oreo buttercream? Just go and make this delicious oreo buttercream in your kitchen now!!
Perfect to be used on those moist chocolate cupcakes.
👩🏼🍳 Pro Tips
- Light and Fluffy Buttercream: The secret to making your buttercream light and fluffy lies in using softened butter. Beat it till it is visibly paler in colour. Do not skip this step.
- Add condensed milk in 3-4 parts.
- Fold crushed Oreos using a spatula if you want a paler-looking buttercream unlike the ones shown in the pictures today.
- Use coarsely crushed or finely crushed Oreos depending upon the final look of buttercream that you want (coarse will give you more texture while fine will make your frosting smoother).
- Use large piping nozzles as the crushed Oreos can clog smaller piping tip during the piping process 🙂
- Fine crumbs of Oreos absorb the moisture from the butter and become smooth giving you the melt-in-your-mouth velvety buttercream feel.
- Also using fine crumbs gives a smooth buttercream texture which makes it easier to frost the sides of the cake easily when compared to buttercream with coarsely crushed Oreos.
- Did you know paddle attachment incorporates more air into butter while beating? And hence It is recommended to use a paddle attachment over a whisk attachment whenever you are making buttercream to get that fluffier texture.
- This frosting is best used to frost an oreo cake or oreo cupcakes. Goes well with chocolate cake or chocolate cupcakes too.
▶︎ Storage Instructions
- Store the leftover frosting in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Never store under direct sunlight.
- Or, store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Thaw to room temperature, and stir it vigorously to get the consistency back to normal if it seems curdled.
Best Buttercream Base Recipe
Since Oreo Buttercream Frosting is merely the addition of crushed Oreos into buttercream, technically you can use any buttercream base of your choice.
I prefer and recommend using this buttercream frosting with condensed milk because this is less sweet than the classic American Buttercream frosting. The addition of Oreos (which is again a sweet cookie) might make the frosting too sweet for a few of you.
On the other hand, if you have a sweeter palette then you can definitely opt for the classic buttercream frosting recipe.
If you prefer silky frosting then an Italian Meringue Buttercream base is ideal for you.
Looking for an oreo buttercream frosting recipe without butter? Yes you heard that right!! You can add Oreos to our buttercream recipe without butter.
Not only buttercream, but you can also make oreo desserts like this oreo mousse using whipped cream or use cream cheese frosting as the base too to make oreo cream cheese frosting.
🤔 Fine or Coarsely Crushed Oreos
You can use fine or coarsely crushed Oreos in this recipe depending upon the final outcome that you are looking for.
If you use fine Oreos, they'll get blended into the buttercream and will give it a darker shade similar to a chocolate buttercream, while coarsely crushed Oreos make for a lighter frosting with a crunchier texture from the cookie.
I prefer using fine crumbs as
- Fine oreo crumbs absorb moisture from the butter and get softer in texture giving you a melt-in-your-mouth velvety texture.
- With fine crumbs, frosting the sides of your cake is easier as compared to buttercream frosting with oreo cookies in it.
- The contrast of oreo buttercream frosting with a chocolate ganache drip as made in our oreo drip cake looks appealing to the eyes.
Frequently Asked Questions:
This recipe is exactly that as we are using condensed milk in place of powdered sugar. But I understand you are talking about American Buttercream as the base?? Well in that case as well I would recommend you to use this recipe as this is less sweet than the classic one.
Can I use shortening instead of butter?
Well Yes, you can. But it is not recommended as it has zero flavours. If you are making it for friends or for clients I would recommend using only butter.
You can frost 12 cupcakes or fill and frost two; 8-inch cake layers using this recipe.
The cookies and cream frosting is stable enough to hold its shape unless kept under direct sunlight. Once frosted it is recommended to always keep the cake in the refrigerator though.
No. The beauty of condensed milk buttercream is that you can literally control the amount of condensed milk you add by adding a little at a time. So taste in between and be your own judge.
Not at all if you use finely crushed oreos like I did and recommend. Because as stated before the fine crumb of oreos absorbs the moisture and becomes soft.
Yes absolutely this frosting can be used under fondant.
